The Sun in the Sky, 2002 Dec 4

sun in the sky The image at left shows the path of the Sun in the sky seen by viewers in the path of the total eclipse. The sun will rise nearly vertically into the sky for people located in the path of totality in South Africa. The image shows the position of the Sun at ten minute intervals.

At 07h20 SAST, at the start of the eclipse, the Sun will be at an azimuth of 104 degrees East of North, and an elevation of 29 degrees above the horizon. At mid eclipse at about 08h22, it will be at azimuth 100 degrees and elevation 40 degrees. At 09h30, just before the end of the eclipse, it will be at azimuth 96 degrees and elevation 59 degrees. The Sun moves through an angle of 15 degrees every hour.

In the image, for clarity the Sun is shown at twice the size it should really be. If a camera with a wide-angle lens is set to take a picture on the same piece of film at ten minute intervals for the period of time illustrated at left, the Sun would appear half the size that it does shown here.

Note that the times quoted above are typical for end of the eclipse path in South Africa, but are not exact for a specific location. Predictions for specific locations vary slightly, for example:
